Life is a Highway

Painted Turnpike continued to dominate the 2-year-old Paint racing season, capturing a win in the $86,890 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity G1 at Fair Meadows Racetrack in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The 2-year-old bay solid gelding crossed the wire handily in 17.620 to capture the 350-yard win and the champion’s purse worth more than $33,000.

Trained by Matt Whitekiller, Painted Turnpike was ridden by Cody Smith; the 2013 gelding, who is by PYC Paint Your Wagon (QH) and out of High Class Turnpike, was bred and is owned by Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. The Speedhorse win gave Painted Turnpike a speed index of 90—his best to date—and lifetime earnings of $178,126.

Two from trainer Dee Keener’s stable battled it out for second and third places in the race. Second went to Bull and jockey Jorge Torres, who finished in 17.828. The 2013 bay tobiano stallion by Cartel Success (QH) and out of Memories of Texas, logged a speed index of 84 and nearly $15,000 for owner Buddy Albin of Denton, Texas. Bred by Bill Price of Thackerville, Oklahoma, Bull’s lifetime earnings now reach nearly $50,000.

Psychedelic Scott and G.R. Carter Jr. claimed third, crossing the wire in 17.878 for a speed index of 82. The 2013 gray solid gelding is by Judys Lineage and out of The Hippie Chick (QH); he was bred by Wendy Ingersoll of Inola, Oklahoma, and is owned by Paint Horse Queens, also of Inola. To date, Psychedelic Scott has earned $89,350.

Other horses in the field were: WL Mr Worldwide, Imahotchicken, MHM Hotwire, Momas Lil Wagon, Royal Snowman, DTL Head Honcho; Royal Country Snowman was scratched.
