Healthy as a Horse

With the kickoff of Paint racing’s 2016 season just weeks away, a number of Oklahoma racetracks have collaborated to develop new guidelines for arriving horses, due to recent outbreaks of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1).

Horses coming from a county or neighboring county that has a facility or racetrack under quarantine for EHV-1. Other horses arriving at the Oklahoma tracks will be required to have a current health certificate issued within 72 hours prior to the horse’s arrival; EHV-1 booster shots are also required.

Read the full details about the new policy in this January 29, 2016, press release posted on Remington Park’s website.

The policy has been adopted by Remington Park, Will Rogers Downs, Fair Meadows, the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, developed in collaboration with the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission.

“First and foremost, Remington Park will always do all it can to protect the health of its equine population. After working with all track management in Oklahoma, the OQHRA, the TRAO, leading equine veterinarians and the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission, we believe this comprehensive plan is best in order to prevent the spread of the EHV-1 Virus in light of the recent outbreaks in New Mexico and Arizona.”

The 2016 Paint & Quarter Horse racing season kicks off March 11 at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For more information, contact the Remington Park Racing Office at 405-425-3271.
