APHA member Cade McCutcheon of Aubrey, Texas, has had a banner year in 2019—the 19-year-old’s first as a professional trainer. According to an NRHA press release, prior to the NRHA Futurity, Cade had won more than $706,616 in lifetime earnings, not including the $307,500 he won in August as co-champion of the inaugural Run for a Million event. Still, he wasn’t counting on winning the Level 4 Open Championship at the 2019 NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
“I didn’t expect to win it my first time here as a professional, but that’s everyone’s goal,” he said.
But that’s just what he did aboard The Super Marioo, a 2016 sorrel solid stallion by Gunnatrashya. The duo earned a total of $196,175 as champions of Levels 2, 3 and 4. For good measure, Cade secured a tie for second place as well with a 223.5 aboard Guns And Dynamite, a 2016 sorrel solid stallion by Colonels Nite Special. Kirstin Booth’s Guns And Dynamite captured a total of $145,724 with Cade as co-reserve champion in the Level 4, and outright reserve champion in Levels 2 and 3. All told, Cade logged $341,899 in a single performance at the NRHA Futurity, pushing him—unofficially—to NRHA Million Dollar Rider status.

In the Non-Pro Futurity, fellow teen Luca Fappani and Gotta Get Diamonds, a 2016 bay solid stallion by Spooks Gotta Whiz, captured the Level 4 & 3 Non Pro Futurity Reserve Champion, Level 2 & Youth Champion titles in a runoff. In the finals, Luca’s original ride was interrupted by a loose dog that chased the pair around their large, fast circles. Luca and Gotta Get Diamonds were awarded re-ride, and they forced the runoff with eventual winner Jesse Asmussen.
The 2019 NRHA Futurity featured tons of Paint Horses proving themselves as elite performers across all ranks. APHA was on site to provide registration assistance and to celebrate our Paints as part of the Paint Reining Incentive Program, which awards special prizes and recognition to the highest-placing participating Paints in five divisions.
