Up for the Challenge

Dryce Stoner, Bald Face Shiner and Sargent Kisses Boo snagged fast times as team roping finalists in the Cowboy Publishing Timed Event Challenge January 27 at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

Dryce, an APHA member from Fairfield, Texas, qualified for the timed event challenge by having clean, fast, runs during the stock show’s APHA roping classes, held earlier in the week. The 65 fastest times from the stock show’s Paint and Quarter Horse shows were invited to return for the challenge, which consisted of one go-round and premium money awards.

“Tyler Waters headed for me on all my runs and gave me a great opportunity to make the finals,” Dryce said. “ I just had a good, smooth run in the finals. Tyler got the steer roped fast and Sargent Kisses Boo was hustling to get into good position—he made it easy for me to rope two feet.”

Paired with Sargent Kisses Boo, Dryce tied for second, third and fourth with a time of :3.8, taking home a prize of $4,105. Sargent Kisses Boo is a 2003 bay tobiano gelding by Codys Jacs In Red (QH) and out of QT Vicious Kisses. Bald Face Shiner, who made the finals but finished out of the money, is a 1998 palomino overo gelding by Shining Spark (QH) and out of Nine Bar Sun (QH).

Dryce says Sargent Kisses Boo’s work ethic makes him an excellent roping partner; he has competed in the timed event challenge aboard the gelding in previous years and has even made the finals once before.

“He just gives me everything he has every run—he works hard to get into the correct position and stop hard,” Dryce said. “He’s a very special little horse, and he’s been special to me since the first day I bought him.”
