PBRIP awards prizes to 2016 top contenders

APHA’s RAM Trucks Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program honored its colorful barrel racers for their high achievements in 2016. Teresa Watson of Nowata, Oklahoma, and Miss Abri Kid Abra ran home with the 1D championship, earning a custom trophy saddle by Elite Custom Saddles and a Gist Silversmiths custom trophy buckle.

“ ‘Abi’ is actually my husband, Wayne’s, roping horse, but she never gets to go much because he’s so busy. So, my daughter and I use her as a back-up jackpot horse and at Paint events,” Teresa said. “We knocked a barrel here and there, but Abi stayed in the 1D most of the year.”

Abi is a 2004 black overo mare by Tishamingo Kid and out of Miss Ribbon Rio.

Wayne also played a role in helping others topping the PBRIP charts—he’s worked with 2D champion Mega Legacy, 3D champion Hawks Smoken Legacy and 3D/4D Top Five finisher Top Rainbow.

Teresa also noted the impressive results of horses stemming from Paint breeder Joni Voloshin of Craig, Colorado; year-end finalists Mega Legacy, Hawks Smoken Legacy and Tru Cover Girl are all products of Joni’s program.

“It has been my intention to raise the true all-around horse that could compete successfully in every division of the APHA since the inception of my breeding program,” Joni said. “My horses have lots of speed, rate, and can turn a cow or a barrel—plus they’re nice to look at. The PBRIP has been a great opportunity for my horses.”

“Having this program to share with our Paint enthusiast and barrel racing families has been so amazing, especially to see horses we’ve raised and trained do so well,” Teresa said. “PBRIP has caused riders, trainers and breeders come together and really enjoy this competition.
