APHA Convention offers historic Dealey Plaza tour in February

Step into Dealey Plaza, and you feel like you are on sacred ground. This is where, last November, thousands of people bowed their heads or clasped hands with loved ones on November 22 to mark the precise moment 50 years ago that shots rang out to take the life of John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States.

Dealey Plaza has changed a bit since 1963. The famous Stemmons Freeway sign is gone, and the Hertz car rental sign has been removed from atop the School Book Depository. Some of the train tracks over the triple freeway underpass have been replaced with electrified commuter rail tracks, and the parking lot behind the stockade fence is now paved. A plaque is now situated on the grass between the Pergola and Elm Street. Otherwise, it’s pretty much the same place: THE place.

APHA members will have the opportunity to spend an afternoon at historic Dealey Plaza during the upcoming APHA Convention & Membership meeting in February. The afternoon excursion includes a tour of the Sixth Floor Museum at the early 20th-century warehouse formerly known as the Texas School Book Depository. The museum examines the life, times and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Following the museum tour, members will dine in one of Dallas’s unique restaurants. Buses will leave from the hotel following the New President’s Inaugural Luncheon on February 24 and will return that evening.
