VKRA Welcome Home DF and Abraham Hernández of Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico, made history last month when they won the first international PBRIP race at the NBHA México Championship held March 17-20 at Rancho San Bartolo, just outside Guadalajara. The event attracted 224 entries, including seven registered Paints competing for the PBRIP payout.
Abraham and the 2017 bay roan solid mare (pictured above) were the only PBRIP entry to make it to the finals, running a clean 18.157 and winning the entire $1,000 sidepot sponsored by APHA. The unexpected victory took everyone by surprise, as Abraham introduced the mare to barrels just three weeks prior to their big win.
“She is so easy going which made it so much easier to get her in the mindset of a barrel horse, achieve three clean runs, and lowering our time on each run,” he said.
Sired by Colonels Top Gun and out of Little Girl Hancock (QH), “Vaquera” was bred by Lupita Zermeño of Guadalajara, Mexico, and used as a kids’ trail horse until she was purchased 18 months ago by DF Ranch of Tepatitlan, Jalisco, for breakaway roping and escaramuza. No one expected Vaquera to win, but her owners entered the little mare because they were eager to support PBRIP.
“She is unbelievable. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her,” said Ana Maria Moreno, one of Vaquera’s owners. “If she can do this with three weeks of training, I can’t imagine what she will become.”
Paint Horses had two more opportunities to shine, and Daniela Ramirez of El Naranjo, Durango, Mexico, seized both. Earlier in the week, she and her stallion Two Smart Lil Lena had the fastest PBRIP time in the first two rounds with 19.183, winning the PBRIP award buckle sponsored by Lazy Suzan Ranch of Tyler, Texas. Then Daniela and “Toretto” came back Saturday night to clock 16.155, the fastest time in the Paint Challenge. The 2010 sorrel tovero stallion is by Golden Little Lena and out of the Color Me Smart-bred mare LS Lenas Blue Ribbon; he was bred by Roger and Renee Bates of Hope, Arkansas.

VKRA Welcome Home DF y Abraham Hernández de Arandas, Jalisco, México, hicieron historia el mes pasado cuando ganaron la primera carrera internacional PBRIP en las Finales Nacionales NBHA México del 17 al 20 de marzo en Rancho San Bartolo, a las afueras de Guadalajara. El evento atrajo 224 entradas, incluidas siete Caballos Pintos registrados que competían por la bolsa PBRIP.
