Common Questions

How are “PBRIP Horse of the Year” earnings calculated, and what races qualify toward year-end points?

Qualifying timeframe runs from January 1 to December 31 of the calendar year.

PBRIP Horse of the Year is awarded to the Paint that earns the most money from all approved PBRIP events during the competition year. New for 2026,PBRIP Sweepstakes earnings are included. PBRIP Futurity and Texas-bred sidepots are excluded. Note: Earnings from restricted races, like the Pink and Ruby Buckle races, do not count toward the Horse of the Year award.

The owner of the 2026 PBRIP Horse of the Year receives a Martin Saddlery custom saddle.

Your standing for “Horse of the Year” can be checked under the Resources tab on our website.

I want to register or transfer ownership of my horse at a scheduled event I will be attending.  What do I need to do?

Registration and transfer of a Paint Horse can only be done at select events, where an APHA staff member is in attendance; otherwise, plan ahead to submit all required materials well in advance of your race date. Review the APHA Rule Book on registration and transfer processes, or view details on our website. All applicable forms are available to complete online at apha.com.

  • Include completed paperwork for your registration or transfer, including all required signatures from the stallion/dam owner for registration or from the owner of record for a transfer of ownership.
  • When registering, include clear pictures showing the entire horse from the left, right, front and rear.
  • Include closeups of white markings; if minimal, include extra photos with a ruler next to the qualifying white marking to help with registration classification.
  • Submit payment information. The name on the credit card should be reflected on the APHA payment form, exactly as it appears on the card.
  • New owner must be a current APHA member. The owner’s name on as it appears on the registration papers and APHA membership ID referenced must be the same. You can purchase a membership as part of the paperwork you’re submitting.
  • APHA staff can assist in estimating credit card charges resulting from the transaction(s) for your records. Email cpeercy@apha.com for details.
At barrel races offering a 4D/5D payout—where the producer advertises a combined day payout on a two-day race—can APHA offer a daily PBRIP sidepot payout (or two payouts) rather than one payout for the weekend?

Example: The PBRIP sidepot is $250 and the producer is holding a two-day race—can a daily PBRIP sidepot payout of $125 per day (plus a % of entry fees) be offered instead?

Answer: APHA leaves the decision on award allocations to the producer when distributing PBRIP sidepot monies. The association allows the barrel racing producer to select a 4D or 5D format for monetary allotments, depending on what aligns best with their open race payout plan. APHA’s objective is to give producers freedom to do what is best for their exhibitors. Race payout options may differ from race to race and producer to producer. If exhibitors have a preference, you are encouraged to visit with the producer or feel free to visit with APHA and we will share your thoughts. APHA will communicate with producers to ensure they are accurately advertising a PBRIP sidepot as a daily payout or combined payout.

What party is responsible for determining the entry fee amount charged to enter a PBRIP sidepot?

Example: A producer charges a $40/day entry fee for a two-day race with a PBRIP sidepot of $200. Exhibitors pay $80 for the combined two-day race to be eligible for any PBRIP sidepot payout at this race. Producers send APHA $10 for the day race and $2 for the second day race for a total of $12. The producers keep 10% of the entry ($8). Where is the rest of the $60 entry fee dispensed?

Answer: APHA only requires producers to send a fee of $10 per entry to the association.   PBRIP sidepots are 75% payback, depending on the added money.

How many entries are in the sidepot?

PBRIP entries are taken online, therefore the producer may not be able to provide this information without a time lag. If an APHA representative is at an event, we are happy to provide updated information to you. Please understand, however, entry numbers can fluctuate rapidly.

Is an APHA membership required prior to competing at a PBRIP event?

All exhibitors and horse owners must maintain a current and valid APHA membership to participate in the PBRIP program.

Barrel Racing Producer Notes

The PBRIP entry fee is determined by the event producer; however, a $10 fee per entry must be paid to APHA at the time the results are reported. Results from the race are due to APHA within 15 days after race concludes. The following information must be included in the results:
