Meet the BOD: Laurie Roden

Laurie Roden

Laurie Roden is no one-trick pony. From halter to hunter under saddle to speed events, breeding, service and more, the horsewoman is dedicated to diversifying her experiences in the Paint Horse realm and finding ways to expand opportunities for all. Splitting her time between Arizona and Colorado, Laurie joined the APHA Board of Directors in 2025.

“For the past 25+ years, I’ve been proudly involved with APHA as both a breeder and exhibitor.  During that time I have dedicated myself to producing quality Paint Horses, showcasing their abilities and supporting growth of the Paint Horse community,” she said. “This journey has shaped me, challenged me, and given me some of the most meaningful experiences and relationships of my life.”

Drawn In

“I didn’t choose Paint Horses—they chose me. At first, it was their incredible coloring that drew me in, but once I started breeding, the surprise of what colors each foal chose to wear completely hooked me. No matter how many years I’ve been doing this, that first glimpse of a newborn foal’s pattern has never lost its magic. My life pretty much revolves around Paint Horses, I don’t just breed and show them; my life is horses and I live for change, connections with people and even the surprise of what unique colors are born every year.”

‘Leadership With Heart’

“My path into APHA leadership grew naturally out of passion, involvement and a deep commitment to the Paint Horse community. What began as a love for the breed evolved into a desire to give back to the organization that has given so much to me. Over time, I started volunteering, participating in committees, attending the Leadership Gathering and connecting with fellow members. Mark Kuhlwein and Diane Alves were the ones that inspired me to run for the BOD.”

“The most meaningful part of being on the Board is the sense of purpose: knowing you are giving back to the very breed that has given so much to us. Its leadership with heart where every meeting, every vote and every initiative is a chance to make a difference. One of the biggest misconceptions is that its ‘all prestige, power and fancy titles. Truthfully, its more like herding cats, except the cats have opinions and personalities. But seriously, seeing your work make a difference for the breed and community make it rewarding and never boring. The most rewarding part is the opportunity to give back, to help shape the future of APHA and to contribute to something much larger than myself. I’ve always said you need to show up and participate or you lose your ability to criticize.”

Innovation & Evolution

“I am inspired by the innovation and evolution happening within the association; new programs, expanded Youth initiatives and opportunities for paybacks. The coming years will bring new ideas, new leadership, challenges and moments to keep us inspired and proud.”

A Network of Support

“So much goes on behind the scenes and so many people work tirelessly to keep this organization strong. APHA just isn’t about shows and registrations; it’s a community of volunteers, staff and board members who genuinely care about horses, people, finding ways to grow our Youth and the future of the breed.”

Jump In

“Serving on the Board of Directors is a lot more work than you think—and a lot more fun than you expect! And yes, there are meetings … lots of meetings. But there is also laughter, camaraderie and joy working with people who are just as passionate about Paint Horses as you are. Jump in, roll up your sleeves and follow your passion. It’s not about titles or glory; it’s about serving the breed, giving back, the people and the community.”
