Your PBRIP Questions—Answered!

Confused about PBRIP or how payouts are made? APHA staff often fields questions about the topic, so we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about PBRIP. Check it out to get your burning questions answered.

Question: Regarding the 2025 PBRIP Sweepstakes race, why did the Texas-bred $10K sidepot not follow the 5D format for payouts? Why was it only a 4D payout?

Answer: Texas-bred monies are paid out to the Top 10 Fastest Texas-bred horses. TPHBA doesn’t adhere to a D payout system. The TPHBA contact is Lex Smurthwaite; phone: 817-781-5980.

Question: At barrel races offering a 4D/5D payout, where the producer advertises a combined day pay out on a 2-day race, can APHA offer a daily PBRIP sidepot payout (2) rather than 1 payout for the weekend? Example: The PBRIP sidepot is $250 and the producer is holding a 2-day race. Can APHA offer a daily PBRIP sidepot payout of $ 125/day plus a % of the entry fees instead?

Answer: APHA leaves the decision on award allocations to the producer when distributing PBRIP sidepot monies.  The association allows the barrel racing producer to select a 4D or 5D format for monetary allotments—depending on what aligns best with their open race payout plan. APHA’s objective is to give producers freedom to do what is best for their exhibitors. Race payout options may differ from race to race and producer to producer. If exhibitors have a preference, you are encouraged to visit with the producer or feel free to visit with APHA and we will broadly share your thoughts. APHA will communicate with producers to ensure they are accurately advertising a PBRIP sidepot as a daily payout or combined payout.

Question: A producer charges a $40/day entry fee for a 2-day race with a PBRIP sidepot of $200. Exhibitors therefore pay $80 (for the combined 2-day race) to be eligible for any PBRIP sidepot payout at this race. Producers send APHA $10 for the day race and $2 for the 2nd day race for a total of $12. The producer elects to keep 10% of the entry or $8 ($80 entry fee x 10%). Where are the rest of the $60 entry fees dispensed? ($80 entry fee minus $12 APHA fee minus $8 to producer = $60)

Answer: As of 2025, APHA only requires producers to send a fee of $10 per entry to the association. Prior to 2025, the $2 per entry amount was used to subsidize our year-end awards budget. APHA no longer offers year-end points and awards, therefore, we do not charge the additional $2/entry fee as of January 1, 2025, to exhibitors. PBRIP sidepots are 75% payback, depending on the added money.

Summary: We give producers decision making freedom on the distribution of PBRIP sidepot funds to best serve their barrel racers!
