Paint racing leader Dan Jones passes

Dedicated Paint racing leader Dan Jones of Kemp, Texas, died September 14, 2025. He was 79.

Dan and his wife, Kaye, were passionate supporters of Paint racing. They frequently earned APHA year-end titles as Paint racing’s leading owner and breeder, based on money earned by their racehorses. Among their most notable champions was CRM Livewire, APHA’s No. 1 leading sire of money-earning racehorses; his progeny have earnings exceeding $8 million down the track. During the Joneses ownership, the 2009 bay tobiano stallion earned over $100,000 in 22 starts and was APHA’s world champion racehorse in 2012 and 2013. Dan served on the APHA Racing Advisory Committee from 2003–2020. He received the Paul Harber Racing Distinguished Service Award for his impact and dedication.

Surviving Dan is his wife, Kaye; daughters Tammy Jones Sanford, Kim Malsbury and husband George, and Brandi Kaye Dunks; grandchildren Emily Marie Sanford and husband Luis Jimenez, Laura Sanford, Heath Malsbury, Dylan Malsbury and wife Lexie, Callie Rose Malsbury, Payton Rivoire and husband Tommy, and Morgan Kaye Pedroso; and one great grandchild, Briggs Anthony Rivoire.
