Success Runs in the Family: Jaylan Clary & her homebred Paints take on PBRIP
By Laurel Cox
For Jaylan Clary of Weatherford, Texas, barrel racing is a family affair. She began competing on I Hope To Impress You, her 2005 sorrel tobiano mare affectionately known as “Jewels,” when Jaylan was 13 years old. Now 30, the horsewoman competes on three babies out of the mare, with a fourth in training. With three world championships earned so far, Jaylan knows she has something special in her homebred horses.
When Jewels was retired from competition in 2015, Jaylan decided to breed the mare to Threevdashtavictory (QH); Dash of Hope, a 2016 sorrel tobiano mare, was the result. “Jade” was everything Jaylan had hoped for—conformationally correct, beautifully colored and smart like her dam; the horsewoman knew she wanted more babies out of Jewels.
Jewels produced three more foals: Slick My Jewels, a 2019 bay solid stallion by Slick By Design (QH); Blazin On By, a 2020 sorrel solid mare by Blazin Honor (QH); and Frosted Jewels, a 2021 palomino tobiano mare by Sun Frosted Rocket (QH). While each horse is unique, they all share the personality and grit Jaylan loves.
“They all have their mom’s personality in some way, but they are also very different,” Jaylan said. “None of them run the same. None of them turn the same. I think they got the athleticism from their dads, but they got the brains and the willpower from their mom.”
Barrels & Blessings
Attending the APHA World Championship Show is always on Jaylan’s list of barrel races to attend. She is grateful for the way that APHA gives back to its members through the Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program’s added-money payouts. Competing on Paints pays for itself, she says.
At the 2025 World Show, Jaylan clinched a world title aboard Blazin On By, adding to two previous world championships earned aboard Jade. She and Slick My Jewels ran the sixth-fastest time in the 2025 PBRIP Sweepstakes, earning $750. While she has not yet competed on Frosted Jewels, Jaylan is excited for the mare’s future and for her continued involvement in the Paint Horse community.
“I breed Paints because of the people and the association that’s involved,” she said. “[Paints] bless me.”
