Paint Horse Breeder Legacy Award bestowed on Doris Schocker
Longtime APHA breeder Doris Schocker of Summit, South Dakota, will be honored with the association’s Gregg Reisinger Paint Horse Breeder Legacy Award. The milestone represents her commitment to produce 50 crops of registered Paints. She will receive the award on June 27 at the 2024 APHA Hall of Fame & Awards Ceremony in Fort Worth, Texas.
Registration of her 2022 black overo mare Fancy Windsong cemented Schocker’s legacy as a 50-year APHA breeder. Her first APHA-registered foal was Cupid Paint, a 1958 dun overo mare. Since then, Schocker has bred 292 registered Paint Horses.
Best known as a producer of black overos, Schocker’s foals often carry the Kingfisher bloodline, she says. Schocker first stood Diablo Cochise, and others like Buck McCue Jr and Kingfisher McCue followed in his hoofprints. Schocker was an early adopter of color genetics; she faithfully studied genetics and kept photographic records of the hundreds of foals sired by her stallions. Now 90 years old, Schocker is still breeding horses.
Developed based on input from the Breed Integrity Advisory Committee, the breeder legacy award honors longtime Paint Horse producers when they reach the milestone of 50 foal crops registered with APHA. The award was named in honor of late Past President Gregg Reisinger; he remains APHA’s lifetime leading breeder of performance Paint Horses (by points earned and point-earners) and halter point-earners. Former award recipients include Reisinger (2022), Dennis Graff (2022) and Lloyd Johanningmeier (2023).
