Mimosa Lady wins 2023 Karen Utecht Memorial Stakes

With 25-1 odds, Mimosa Lady earned her first stakes victory at the $40,000 Karen Utecht Memorial Stakes, which took place October 14, 2023, at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. The win added $15,800 to the mare’s lifetime earnings, boosting her career earnings to $46,998.

Mimosa Lady is a 2020 bay solid mare by Wagon Tales (QH) and out of Elaina Go Go. She was trained by Matt Whitekiller, ridden by Francisco Giles, and owned/bred by Dan and Kaye Jones of Kemp, Texas.

The Karen Utecht Memorial Stakes was named in honor of the late Karen Utecht, a longtime APHA racing director and passionate down-the-track supporter who lost her battle with cancer three years ago. Current APHA Director of Racing Carly Peercy presented the trophy and blanket in the winner’s circle to the Joneses, who also won this race in 2021 with Southern Electric. Excited about the unexpected win, Kaye also noted that this race holds a special place in their hearts because of it’s connection to Utecht.
