Barrel Racing

Barrel Racing

Paint Horses are favorite mounts for barrel racing events, from local playdays to professional rodeos. In addition to offering barrel-racing events at APHA-approved competitions, APHA brings the association to barrel racers at events they already attend. APHA’s Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program encourages ownership and breeding of speed-bred Paint Horses by offering Paint-exclusive sidepots at participating events nationwide.

PBRIP

Paint-Exclusive Sidepots

Founded in 2013, PBRIP—Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program—bridges the gap between barrel racers who run Paints and APHA. PBRIP brings the breed to you at barrel-racing events nationwide by adding money to sidepots exclusively for participating, PBRIP-enrolled Paints. Each year, PBRIP pays out more than $125,000 at events around the country, along with a huge 4D added-money sweepstakes at the APHA World Championship Show and PBRIP year-end championship awards.

Want PBRIP at your event?

To be eligible for PBRIP-sanctioned barrel races, the event/show producer must agree to offer a PBRIP sidepot and follow a few simple guidelines. First, submit an event-approval application with payment at least 30 days prior to the event.

The PBRIP entry fee is determined by the event producer, but a $10 fee per entry must be paid to APHA at the time the results are reported. Results from the race are due to APHA within 15 days after race concludes. The following information must be included on the results:
  • Horse’s APHA-registered name
  • Rider’s name and APHA ID number
  • Placing and actual time
  • Money earned, if applicable
Chrome Buckle
APHA, Pink Buckle and Ruby Buckle have partnered to develop the Chrome Buckle Powered by PBRIP, a Paint Horse-exclusive incentive at the West Ruby Buckle event, the East Ruby Buckle event and the Pink Buckle. Chrome Buckle Powered by PBRIP is a class-within-a-class that offers exclusive sidepots to participating Paints.

Chrome Buckle Powered by PBRIP will return in 2025 at all Ruby and Pink Buckle races!

  • Participating horses must be APHA-registered (Regular Registry or Solid Paint-Bred)
  • PBRIP added money is only available at races designated and authorized by APHA.
  • PBRIP sidepot payout is at the producer’s discretion.
  • PBRIP Minimum Payout:
    • A minimum of 75% of the total entry fees should be allocated to the jackpot (in most cases).
    • For shows where the total added money exceeds $1,000, the minimum payout to the jackpot may be reduced to 70%.

PBRIP Earnings

  • PBRIP Horse of the Year is awarded to the Paint that earns the most money from all approved PBRIP events during the competition year.
    • Note: Earnings from restricted races, like the Pink and Ruby Buckle races, do not count toward the Horse of the Year award.
  • The owner of the PBRIP Horse of the Year receives a custom belt buckle and a $1,000 cash bonus.
