APHA has released a youth virtual program series to encourage participation and involvement for all Youth Paint Horse enthusiast which is  proudly presented by Markel Insurance! The following virtual contests will be held:

  • Markel Virtual Prepared Speech Contest
  • Markel Virtual Hippology Contest
  • Markel Virtual Horse Bowl Contest

Between each contest we will be awarding $3,000 in scholarships!

  1. All contest must be AjPHA Members. If you are not an AjPHA member, but would like to participate, you can purchase a 1-year $25 AjPHA membership by clicking here.
  2. Contest is FREE!
  3. Scholarships will be awarded for ALL contests.
  4. Each contest will have it’s own rules and guidelines. Be sure to carefully read the rules for each contest you decide enter!
  5.  All contests are virtual and materials must be summited by the deadlines specified.

General Information

The Markel Virtual Hippology Contest gives youth an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge on an equine related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Contestants then apply their knowledge in practical ways through teamwork and problem solving. Youth will be tested on all aspects of the horse and equine industry. The hippology contest provides an educational program for all participants, including those who may not own a horse.

Ages:

  • All AjPHA Members that are ages 18 & under are eligible to participate for FREE.

Please note: The COVID-19 Youth age eligibility extension also applies to this contest. Therefore, Youth that were 19 years old on January 1, 2021 can enter the contest if they have a junior membership.

Details:

  • To enter the contest, you must have a team of three (3) or four (4) AjPHA Members.
  • All team members will be required to complete an online Hippology Exam with 75 questions that will be randomized.
  • Each team member will be allotted an hour and half to complete their Hippology exam, and they must submit their exam between July 26th at 8 a.m. CDT to July 30th at 5 p.m. CDT.

Rules & Guidelines:

  • All contestants must be an AjPHA Member.
  • Each contestant must complete the exam by themselves and with no help.
  • Questions will be randomized and vary for each team member.
  • At the end of each section, contestants will be asked if they would like to continue or retake the section. CONTESTANTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RETAKE A SECTION, IF A SECTION IS RETAKEN THE FIRST SCORE WILL BE USED.
  • Rules and results are final. All participants accept the rules and scoring system upon entry and involvement in the contest.

Scoring

  • Each test is worth 100 points. Teams will be required to complete at least three Hippology Exams, and teams of four will have their lowest score dropped. Therefore, a perfect team score will be 300 points.
  • Every minute a team member goes over the allotted time, they will have a point subtracted from their score.
  • If a tiebreaker is needed, the team with the overall shortest time to complete their Hippology Exams will be the winner.

The Markel Virtual Horse Bowl Contest encourages youth to develop a more complete knowledge of equine related subjects in a competitive setting. As a result, this contest is an excellent way to develop self-confidence and teamwork skills. It also provides an educational program for all youth members, including those that may not own a horse.

General Information

The Markel Virtual Prepared Speech Contest is designed to encourage youth to recognize, organize and present information on a equine related topic. This contest fosters confidence in youths’ ability to present information in a logical and concise manner. Furthermore, by participating in this contest, youth are expected to increase their level of equine knowledge. Besides becoming responsible and educated horse people, this contest will help youth build strong leadership, communication and decision-making skills.

Age Groups:

  • 13 & Under
  • 14-19

Please note: The COVID-19 Youth age eligibility extension also applies to this contest. Therefore, Youth that were 14 years old on January 1, 2021 can enter the 13 & Under or 14-19 division. They just can’t enter both divisions.

Details:

  • Contestants must submit their video between April 12 at 8 a.m. CDT and April 16 at 5 p.m. CDT.
  • Contestants must prepare a video of them speaking on a topic that APHA selects.
  • The contestants must submit their video through the enter form below. To submit the video on the form, it must be uploaded to a file share site like YouTube or Vimeo.
  • The contest will have two (2) Official Judges.

Rules & Guidelines:

  • All contestants must be an AjPHA Member.
  • The 13 & Under contestants speeches must be between 2 – 3 minutes and the 14-19 contestants speeches must be between 3 – 5 minutes. If a contestant video time is under or over the allotted amount, they will be penalized.
  • Contestant should introduce themselves and the topic, at the beginning of the videoed speech.
  • Videos should be raw footage with no editing
  • Speeches not appropriately related to the topic can be disqualified at the discretion of the judge(s).
  • No visual aids or props may be used.
  • Participants in the 13 & Under age group CAN use notes; however, excessive use of notes may be counted against the participant. Participants in the 14-19 age group CANNOT use notes.
  • Speeches should be originally constructed and delivered by the participant(s). Any form of plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Resource citation should be specific, accurate and honest. If contest officials/judges confirm plagiarism, the participant will automatically be placed last, with a notation on the scorecard to reflect such infraction.
  • Rules and results are final. All participants accept the rules and scoring system upon entry and involvement in the contest.

13 & Under Division:

  • What are 5 things you have learned about being an AjPHA Member?
  • How would you increase participation and involvement in the horse industry?
  • How has your involvement with horses and/or the equine industry impacted your life?
  • How much impact does the horse industry have outside of the United States?

14-19 Division:

  • How do you think COVID-19 will impact the horse industry?
  • How does the Overo Lethal White Syndrome impact APHA breeders?
  • How does the equine industry impact the agricultural industry?
  • How much impact does the horse industry have outside of the United States?

*Contestants only need to choose one of the topic options, but the topic must be selected from their age division.

Scoring

  • Introduction – 10 Points
  • Organization- 20 Points 
  • Content and Accuracy- 20 Points
  • Delivery- 20 Points
  • Stage Presence- 20 points
  • Conclusion- 10 Points
