Kaidence Joyce has a lot to be proud about after wrapping up her first-ever APHA World Championship Show. The 12-year-old from Port Orange, Florida, was shocked and excited to win a world championship in Novice Youth 13 & Under Hunter Under Saddle with All I Wantza Spot, her 2016 bay solid mare. She earned two reserve world championships with “Kat” as well, and had great goes with her 2024 brown overo gelding VS Cool Ride in the Yearling Futurity Project classes. But one award might stick out above the rest.

On June 25, Kaidence was surprised with the 2025 Robyn Hanna Sportsmanship Award. The honor, established by former AjPHA President Meredith Milton, recognizes a Youth exhibitor who displays exemplary sportsmanship throughout the World Show. It’s presented in memory of late APHA member Robyn Hanna, who embodied the essence of sportsmanship, displaying kindness, integrity and unwavering support for fellow competitors. Kaidence receives a $1,000 scholarship from the American Paint Horse Foundation and a Gist Silversmiths trophy buckle courtesy of the Milton family.

Armed With a Smile

Though her nominator was anonymous, they noted, “Kaidence is always a team player willing to offer congratulations, a helping hand or a kind smile. She is a sweet girl that is always everyone’s biggest cheerleader.” A panel of judges reviewed nominations and made their own observations to select the winner.

Kaidence attended the World Show with her friend, Cecelia Bischoff. The friends always try to lift each other’s spirits.

“Whenever my friend is nervous, I give her pep talks and try to cheer her up whenever she does good or bad,” Kaidence said. “I always cheer for everybody, no matter who they are or how they do, and I’m kind to everybody.”

A little kindness goes a long way. APHA appreciates members like Kaidence who set a great example for others and help make the World Show even more memorable.
