Record-setting debuts are rare feats, reserved for only the most promising race horses. Ivoriona fits the bill as she obliterated her competition in her first race, rolling to a new 250-yard Remington Park track record by a Paint or Appaloosa.
A 2-year-old bay tobiano Oklahoma-bred Paint filly, Ivoriona gave a glimpse of her potential when she easily won a Remington Park training race on March 2. Showing she was ready for the real thing, Ivoriona rocketed from the starting gate in Sunday’s opener at Remington Park for Paint and Appaloosa maidens. Jockey Jorge Torres was simply a passenger, hand-riding her throughout as she poured it on to win by 3-1/4 lengths, crossing the finish in :13.036 seconds over a fast track.
The time set a new Remington Park standard for Paints or Appaloosas at the distance, besting the old record of :13.169 seconds set in May 2014 by Fly CB Fly.
Owned by the Lexington, Oklahoma, partnership of Randy Hill and Mickey Johnson, Ivoriona is trained by Stacy Charette-Hill. The filly was bred in Oklahoma by Mickey and Stanley Johnson and is a daughter of Ivory James (QH) from the Texas Hero mare Friona.
Ivoriona’s next attempt may not come until May as she is being pointed to the Speedhorse Graham Futurity at Remington Park. The trials for that estimated $200,000 futurity will take place on May 21 with the final on June 4.
“We want to try and keep her races spaced out,” Stacy said of Ivoriona’s agenda. “We wanted to break her maiden then go for the biggest futurity for Paints, which is the Speedhorse Graham in May.”
Ivoriona was 2-1 in the betting, paying $6.20 to win, $3 to place and $2.80 to show. Col Bucks (ApHC) was second, paying $4.60 to place and $3.60 to show. Amadevil was third and returned $5.60 to show. Berrenda Rose was the beaten 3-2 wagering favorite, running fourth.
Ivoriona made $10,020 in her career debut.
