EuroPaint Zone Champions honored with special awards

With nine events in its first full year, it’s easy to see APHA’s Paint Horse Championship series is a hit. In late August, the program “crossed the pond” to Europe, bringing expanded recognition and new opportunities to Paint Horse exhibitors in Zone 12 at the EuroPaint Zone Championship, which took place August 23–29 in Kreuth, Germany.

The championship took place in conjunction with the European Paint Horse Championship, the largest international APHA-approved show outside of North America; in 2014, it was APHA’s No. 2 show in the world by entries.

Excited to offer the new program to its exhibitors, the show committee selected 15 classes in which to offer EuroPaint Zone Championship awards, in addition to European Championship titles. Exhibitors and horse owners had to meet specific eligibility requirements in order to win the EuroPaint Zone Championship awards. APHA provided awards for 15 classes—they included custom Gist Silversmiths buckles for the champions and medallions for second- through fifth-placed exhibitors.

Silke Trenz of Konigsbrunn, Germany, earned the first EuroPaint Zone Champion title with Clues Lucky Annie, her 2010 bay tobiano mare. The duo competed in Tobiano Color, taking home both the zone championship and overall European Championship titles; it was Silke’s first time to earn a medal at Europe’s premier Paint Horse show.

“She’s a great horse,” Silke said. “She’s 5 years old, mostly a reining and trail horse. She has a foal who is 4 months old, too. She’s super.”
